Points Specifically Addressed in the Sequence

  • All inch measurements are body inches, or cun. "The middle phalangeal bone of the middle finger is considered to be one body inch. The breadth of index and middle finger is 1.5 inches, and the breadth of the four fingers is figured as 3 inches. The relative size of the fingers of the practitioner and patient must be compensated for when employing this method of measurement." Ellis, from Fundamentals of Chinese Acupuncture
  • Point locations and effects are from Fundamentals of Chinese Acupuncture by Ellis, Wiseman and Boss
  • Classical locations are from The Great Compendium, The Inner Cannon or The Golden Mirror.

Lung 1 (LU-1) "Central Treasury"

Location: On the chest, at the level of the first intercostal space, below the lateral extremity of the clavicle, 6 inches lateral to the anterior midline.

Classical Location: Six inches lateral from CV-20, three intercostal spaces above the nipple, where a pulsating vessel can be felt.

Lung 2 (LU-2) "Cloud Gate"

Location: On the chest, in the depression immediately below the lateral extremity of the clavicle, 6 inches lateral to the conception vessel.

Classical location: Below the clavicle, in the depression two inches to the side of ST-13, six inches from the midline of the chest, where a pulsating vessel can be felt. The point is located with the arm raised.

Kidney 1 (KI-1) "Gushing Spring"

Location: In the depression appearing on the sole when the foot is in plantar flexion, one third of the distance from the base of the toes to the heel.

Classical location: In the depression in the heart of the sole, as felt when the leg is stretched, the foot bent and the toes curled.

Pericardium 8 (PC-8) "Palace of Toil"

Location: On the palm of the hand between the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bones, proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joint, on the radial side of the 3rd metacarpal bone.

Classical location: At the pulsating vessel in the palm of the hand, bend the fourth finger to locate.

Bladder 18-26 (BL 18-26)

Locations: 1.5 inches lateral to the lower border of the spinous processes of the 9th thoracic through 5th lumbar vertabrae, on the swell of the erector spinae muscles.

Bladder 53 (BL-53)

Location: 3 inches lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the 2nd sacral vertebra.

Bladder 36 (BL-36)

Location: In the middle of the transverse gluteal fold. Locate the point in prone position.

Classical location: In the crease below the buttock and above the inner face of the thigh.

Additional Points

It is useful for a Watsu practitioner to know points which address the conditions which arise during or after a Watsu. These include dizziness, tetany, emotional distress or "mania", cold, and ungroundedness (loss of consciousness or "inversion").

To counter dizziness, vomiting:

Governing Vessel 20

Kidney 1 (Moxa this point)

Stomach 36 (ST-36) " Leg Three Li"

Location: Roughly one inch lateral to the crest of the tibia. If the palm of the hand is placed over the patella, the point is located at the level where the middle finger ends.

Classical location: Three body inches below the knee, on the lateral edge of the shinbone, in the fleshy part of the major sinew, at the point where it divides under pressure.

Stomach 36, one of the four command points, is a favorite of Chinese doctors, who routinely moxa their own ST-36 at the end of the day as they do their records.

Pericardium 6 (PC-6) "Inner Pass"

Location: 2 inches above the transverse crease of the wrist, between the tendons of the long palmar muscle and the radial flexor muscle of the wrists.

Classical Location: Between the sinews two inches behind the wrist

Pericardium 8 (PC-8) "Palace of Toil"

Location: On the palm of the hand between the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bones, proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joint, on the radial side of the 3rd metacarpal bone.

Classical location: At the pulsating vessel in the palm of the hand, bend the fourth finger to locate.

To counter "inversion", that is, to resuscitate;
to assist a client back into her body:

Governing Vessel 26 (GV-26) "Human Center"

Location: Below the nose, a little above the midpoint of the philotrum.

Classical location: In the center of the trough below the nose, proximal to the nostrils.

Governing Vessel 20 (GV-20) "Hundred Convergences"

Location: On the mid-saggital line 7 inches above the posterior hairline, on the midpoint of a line connecting the earlobe and the ear apex, 5 inches behind the anterior hairline.

Kidney 1 (KI-1) "Gushing Spring" (Moxa this point)

Location: In the depression appearing on the sole when the foot is in plantar flexion, one third of the distance from the base of the toes to the heel.

Classical location: In the depression in the heart of the sole, as felt when the leg is stretched, the foot bent and the toes curled.

Pericardium 9 (PC-9) "Central Hub"

Location: 0.1 inch proximal to the corner of the nail on the radial side of the middle finger.

Classical location: At the tip of the middle finger, in the depression the width of a Chinese leek leaf away from corner of the nail.

Heart 9 (HT-9) "Lesser Surge"

Location: On the radial side of the little finger, about 0.1 inch proximal to the corner of the nail.

Classical location: On the inner side of the little finger, the width of a Chinese leek leaf away from the corner of the nail.

The ten fingertips are all revival points, but especially PC-9. Pinch the ends of the fingers, the so-called "well points", to achieve this effect. In China when someone faints on the street, a passerby knows to bite the little fingertip to revive the person. The heart meridian ends there and biting Heart 9 opens the heart portals and resuscitates

To counter mania, emotional distress:

Pericardium 6

Governing Vessel 20

Governing Vessel 26

Large Intestine 4 (LI-4) "Union Valley"

Location: In the center of the flesh between the 1st and 2nd metacarpal bones, slightly closer to the 2nd metacarpal bone.

To heat the body if it is cold:

If a receiver is pale or cold to the touch following a session, moxa Stomach 36, Conception Vessel 6 and 4, Kidney 1. Fill up the navel with salt, and moxa over the salt. Another alternative is to lay a slice of fresh ginger pierced with a fork on top of the salt, and moxa over this until she warms up.

To counter tetany:

Pinch the tips of the fingers, the so-called "Ting" well points.

Governing Vessel 20

Governing Vessel 26

Kidney 1

Large Intestine 10 (LI-10) "Arm Three Li"

Location: Two inches below LI-11 on the line drawn from LI-5

Classical location: Two inches below LI-11; the flesh bulges when pressure is applied.

Large Intestine 11 (LI-11) ""Pool at the Bend"

Location: When the elbow is flexed the point is in the depression at the lateral end of the transverse cubital crease, midway between LU-5 and the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.

Classical location: At the outer side of the radius at the elbow. When the hand is placed on the chest, the point is in the depression at the end of the elbow crease.

Lung 3 (LU-3) "Celestial Storehouse"

Location: On the upper arm, 3 inches below the end of the axillary fold, on the radial side of the biceps muscle, 6 inches above LU-5.

Classical location: Located at a pulse three inches below the armpit and five inches above the elbow. The tip of the nose can just reach this point; dab the nose with ink to mark the spot.

Gall Bladder 13 (GB-13) "Root Spirit"

Location: 0.5 inches within the hairline of the forehead, two-thirds of the distance from GV-24 to ST-8.

Classical location: One inch and five fen to the side of BL-4, directly above the ears, four fen within the hairline.
